Of ‘Black’ and ‘Negro’

On Monday night (Feb. 16), during an interview with me on Drive Time Live (HOT 102 FM in Jamaica) about my new book Revelations on Ras Tafari, host June Hines joined Rasta poet Mutabaruka in expressing mild disgust with my use of Negro as a synonym for Black in the context of the discussion and more so my use of certain craniofacial features to describe who a Black person is.

Black History Month: Awkward Reflections (part 1)

Over the last five hundred years, Christianity in Africa and in most countries with people of African ancestry, has been charged with outright racism (when non-Blacks headed the hierarchy within denominations) and with inverse racism (when Blacks headed the hierarchy within denominations). To these charges the Church has had to plead ‘guilty’ or ‘guilty with explanation’, not, regrettably, by its own volition but in response to external pressure, not readily but reluctantly.

The Resurrection

Any analysis of the Easter story from a New Testament perspective must grapple with 1 Corinthians 15. 1 Corinthians is almost universally accepted as written by Paul about AD 55/56 and therefore earlier than Acts and some, if not all, of the Gospels.
From the details of Acts 18:12, which mentions Paul in Corinth with Gallio as proconsul of Achaia—and the Gallio inscription, we know that Paul visited Corinth in AD 50 and departed there…
